Operated initially by silversmith and watchmaker John McFarlane, it is located across the street from Paul Revere’s silversmith shop on today’s Washington Street (then Marlborough Street). The oldest jewelry store in continued operation in the U.S., it is subsequently purchased by John Low, Benjamin Shreve Jr., and then Charles Crump. Incorporated in 1869, the store moves to 225 Washington Street after the Great Fire of 1872, to 147 Tremont Street in 1891, to 330 Boylston Street in 1929, to 440 Boylston Street [222] in November 2005, and to 39 Newbury Street in 2012. The company creates the Davis Cup in 1899. It is purchased by Henry Birks and Sons Ltd. of Canada in 1979, files for bankruptcy in 1979, and is purchased by Tyringham Investments Ltd. in April 1992. The company files for bankruptcy again on September 6, 2006, and is currently owned by David & Company.
